Oates is my heroine; not only for her prolific talents but her history of cutting edge dark fiction. I just finished re-reading “Expensive People” one of her breakout novels. It chronicles an upper middle class (of foreign descent) family in Gross Pointe, Michigan. The protagonist is a troubled adolescent turned stalker turned ….read and find out. Highly criticized at the time as she took the first smackdown swipe at Suburbia. Fearless, concise and detached, I love Joyce Carol Oates on all levels.
